What About a Damaged Side Window or Rear Windscreen?

What About a Damaged Side Window or Rear Windscreen?

You know that a windscreen can be fixed if it has a small crack or chip, but what about if one of your side windows is damaged? Unfortunately, no matter what the damage in a side window or rear windscreen, it has to be replaced. The side windows and rear windscreen are made from a different kind of glass than the front windscreen.

Laminated Glass

The front windscreen is made from laminated glass, which is two panes of glass with a plastic laminated sheet fused in between them. The lamination in the glass keeps the windscreen from shattering and breaking into sharp fragments in an accident, which can hurt you or your passengers. Your rear windscreen and side windows are made with tempered glass.

Tempered Glass

The rear windscreen and side windows are made of a glass that is hardened with hot and cold temperature extremes called tempered glass. Tempered glass is just as important as the laminated glass on the front windscreen as they both play a big part of keeping you and your passengers safe in an accident. Using both hot and cold temperatures on the glass gives it the tensile and compressive strength that it needs to be about 10 times as strong as the original glass.

Shattering into Pieces

Because of the way the glass is tempered with hot and cold temperatures, the edges of the window are weaker than the middle. This difference makes the glass break into a bunch of small rounded pieces rather than large, sharp pieces that can harm you or your passengers. Because of this shattering process, the windows and rear windscreen cannot be repaired. The result would put you and your passengers in danger.

Replacing Your Windows

You do not have to worry, though, because LONDON CAR WINDSCREEN can get that window or rear windscreen replaced in minutes and your insurance will usually cover the entire cost. You do not even have to take time out of your busy day to drive your car here with that broken window. We will come to you, anywhere in the London area, and give you a price quote. If you are happy with the price, we can fix it for you right there in most cases.

How Do You Fix the Window?

  • LONDON CAR WINDSCREEN’S certified glass technician will take a good look at the damage and see what needs to be done.
  • The technician will take the panel off the door and take a look at the glass that remains.
  • He will clean and vacuum all the glass and dirt from the door and car.
  • Once that is done, the technician will put in the new window.
  • After testing the window to be sure it works, he will put the door panel back on.
  • When finished with that window, the technician will vacuum out your car and clean all of the windows and both windscreens while inspecting them for any damage you may have missed.
